FOR RONNIE'S AMUSEMENT

As the 70s got into full swing, Vilma was given more teenybopper roles and musicals to compete with the growing popularity of Nora Aunor, garnering top-billing above the title for every film she made. However, even as her Vilmanians would admit it, she was a far second to Nora Aunor's popularity during this time. (KAYA TAMA LANG NA UNA ANG PANGALAN NI NORA KAYSA KAY VILMA SA “YOUNG LOVE”?)

In 1972, she was first pitted against Nora Aunor in the coutnry's award derbies. Nora was a revelation in And God Smiled at Me, establishing her as one of Philippine Cinema's promising actresses, but Vilma's dual role as the protagonist/antagonist twin sisters in Dama de Noche was a sure awards bait, albeit for an actress trying to break into the stratosphere of greatness. Come Quezon City Film Festival time, Nora Aunor romped away with the Best Actress award, but come FAMAS time, Vilma won her first FAMAS Best Actress Award, however, sharing it with more established actress Boots Anson-Roa. (ITO BA YUNG ACCORDING TO ALFIE LORENZO AY BINILI?) This was the so-called first tie in Philippine awards history, and FAMAS stood in limbo for a year because of this then controversial result. The next year, movie critics joined the ranks of the FAMAS to strengthen its credibility.

The Vilma Santos acting style has been praised by her supporters and ridiculed by her detractors. A signature Vilma acting approach is vocal and unrestrained, even to the point of histrionics. Her vocal inflections are gold, and she can portray a variety of emotions through her voice, making her effective in close-ups but even more effective in over-the-shoulder shots and shots where her back is turned from the camera, in contrast to Nora Aunor's through-the-eyes acting which can move audiences but stays only within the range of the camera. Her facial expressions are also dynamic and powerful. Even with her eyes, which were her greatest liabilities during the start of her career because they weren't as expressive as Aunor's, she was able to harness their power and convert them into another tool in her acting craft, and this was displayed full-blown in Anak and Dekada '70. Her histrionical acting has been praised and ridiculed by people; praised because it is the hallmark of good Filipino acting, but ridiculed because it reinforces that stereotype. However, as the 1980s wore on, Vilma was able to catch herself in control, giving restrained but effective performances in her films in the 90s and the new millenium, with even some of them acted quietly like Nora Aunor would. (IBIG SABIHIN, SA WAKAS NAKAHABOL NA RIN SI VILMA SA ACTING NI NORA AFTER TWO DECADES???)

WILL YOU VOTE FOR VILMA AS VICE-PRESIDENT?
(A) YES NA YES
